Palopo

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Why visit Palopo?

Palopo is the capital of Luwu Regency in South Sulawesi, located on the coast of the Gulf of Bone about 250 km north of Makassar. With a population of around 180,000, it is one of the largest cities in northern South Sulawesi and an important port for the region. The city lies at the foot of Mount Latimojong, the highest mountain in Sulawesi, and serves as the gateway to the northern Toraja and Luwu highlands.

Palopo has a long history as the centre of the Luwu Kingdom, one of the oldest Buginese kingdoms, dating back to the 10th century. The city's position at the head of the Gulf of Bone made it a strategic trading port historically.

The climate is tropical with a dry season June–October. Temperatures average 24–33°C.
