Mamuju

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Why visit Mamuju?

Mamuju is the capital of West Sulawesi province, located on the Makassar Strait coast about 300 km north of Makassar. With a population of around 80,000, it is a relaxed coastal town that became the provincial capital when West Sulawesi was created in 2004 (splitting from South Sulawesi). The city serves as the administrative and commercial centre of the province, surrounded by mountainous forests and palm plantations.

Mamuju is known for its unspoiled landscape — beaches, waterfalls, and forest-clad mountains. It is less developed and quieter than the major Sulawesi cities, offering a glimpse into traditional Mandar and Buginese life.

The climate is tropical with a dry season June–October. Temperatures average 25–33°C.
