Banten

Banten is a province at the western tip of Java, containing the former Banten Sultanate capital of Old Banten (Banten Lama). The historic port city was a major trading hub in the 16th-17th centuries, rivaling Batavia. Today, the area is known for its historical mosques and forts, and for the nearby beach resorts of Anyer and Carita.

From Jakarta, take the Merak toll road (2 hours) or a train to Serang or Merak.

Most visitors stay at the coastal resorts in Anyer/Carita rather than in Banten city. Budget options in Serang or Old Banten area.

Continue west to Merak for the Sumatra ferry. The Carita/Anyer beach strip is 30 minutes south.
