Why visit Bandung?
Bandung is the capital of West Java province, set on a highland plateau at about 768 m above sea level. Known as "Paris of Java" (Parijs van Java) due to its Art Deco architecture and cool climate, Bandung is a major creative and cultural hub. It's famous for its Sundanese culture, outlet shopping, colonial heritage buildings, lush green surroundings, and culinary scene. The city is a popular weekend getaway from Jakarta, with a vibrant café culture, factory outlets, and easy access to volcanic highlands like Tangkuban Perahu and Kawah Putih.

By plane
Husein Sastranegara Airport (BDO) serves domestic flights from Jakarta, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Denpasar, and other Indonesian cities.
By train
Bandung's main station is Stasiun Bandung (also known as Stasiun Hall), with frequent executive and business-class trains from Jakarta's Gambir Station (about 3 hours). The high-speed Whoosh train (KCIC) connects Jakarta's Halim Station to Padalarang (near Bandung) in about 40 minutes, with a shuttle train to Bandung city center.
By bus
Bandung is well-connected by bus from Jakarta (2-3 hours), Bogor, and other cities. The main terminals are Leuwi Panjang and Cicaheum.
By car
Bandung is about 2.5-3 hours from Jakarta via the Cipularang Toll Road. Traffic within the city can be heavy, especially on weekends.
Ride-hailing apps (Gojek and Grab) are the most efficient way to get around Bandung. Taxis are available but less common. Angkot (public minivans) cover fixed routes for very low fares. Damri buses serve major routes. The city center (Dago, Braga, Riau) is walkable in parts. Car rental is possible but be prepared for traffic congestion on weekends.

Gedung Sate, the iconic Art Deco West Java governor's office. Braga Street, a historic pedestrian area with colonial architecture, cafes, and galleries. The Asia Africa Conference Museum (Gedung Merdeka), site of the 1955 Bandung Conference. Saung Angklung Udjo, a cultural center showcasing bamboo angklung music. The Geological Museum. Kampung Naga (a traditional Sundanese village) is about 2 hours away. Tangkuban Perahu volcano and Kawah Putih (White Crater) are popular day trips. The Dusun Bambu Family Park features bamboo architecture and scenic highland views.
Shop at the famous factory outlets on Jalan Riau, Jalan Dago, and Jalan Setiabudi. Dutch Village (De Ranch) for horse riding and family activities. Trekking in the Tangkuban Perahu area. Visit the Floating Market in Lembang. Go paragliding at Bukit Tunggul. Take a whitewater rafting trip on the Citarik River. Visit Cihampelas Walk for shopping and entertainment — the famous "jeans street."

Nasi timbel (rice wrapped in banana leaf with fried chicken, tofu, and tempeh) is a Sundanese staple. Sate maranggi (sweet marinated beef satay), batagor (fried fish dumplings with peanut sauce), siomay (steamed fish dumplings), mie kocok (beef noodle soup), pisang molen (banana pastry), and bandros (coconut rice cake) are local favorites. Braga Street is full of historic cafes. Sudirman Street is known for its food stalls after dark.
Where to drink?
Bandung is known for its coffee culture. Kopi Tubruk (traditional Javanese coffee) is widely available. Es cendol and es campur are popular for cooling down. The city has many artisanal cafes and roasteries.

Bandung offers many options. Dago and Setiabudi areas have the bulk of hotels from budget (Rp 200,000–400,000) to luxury (USD 100–200). Boutique hotels on Braga Street offer heritage charm. Lembang is a popular area for highland resorts and villas (USD 50–150).
What should you buy?
Bandung is a shopping paradise. Riau Street (Jalan Riau) is the center of factory outlets like Heritage, Secret, and Plaza 85. Cihampelas Walk (Ciwalk) is a mall with many clothing stores. Pasar Baru Trade Center is a traditional market for textiles, shoes, and accessories. Rumah Mode is another famous outlet. Local souvenirs include Sundanese handicrafts, batik, and angklung miniatures.
Where to go next?
From Bandung, take the train to Jakarta (3 hours) or Yogyakarta (7 hours). Head south to the beaches of Pangandaran (6 hours). Visit the thermal hot springs at Ciater and the white crater of Kawah Putih. Travel to the port city of Merak for ferry connections to Sumatra. Garut, known for its hot springs and traditional fabric, is 2 hours east.
