Why visit Ennery?

Ennery is a hillside commune in the Artibonite department, located approximately 25 km east of Gonaïves in the foothills of the interior mountains. The town sits at an elevation of roughly 400 m (1,300 ft), offering cooler temperatures (22–28°C / 72–82°F) and panoramic views over the Artibonite Valley below. The population is roughly 30,000, and the economy centres on subsistence farming, coffee cultivation, and small-scale commerce.

Ennery is known in development circles for various NGO projects focused on agriculture, education, and health. The surrounding landscape features a mix of deforested hillsides and pockets of remaining forest, with small farms growing coffee, beans, maize, and root crops.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Toussaint Louverture (PAP) in Port-au-Prince, approximately 155 km south (4–5 hours by road). There is no air service to Ennery.

By Train

There is no railway service in Haiti.

By Car / Road

Ennery is accessible from Gonaïves via a secondary road heading east into the hills (approximately 25 km, 45 minutes–1 hour). The road is paved in sections but deteriorates to unpaved tracks; a 4x4 is recommended. Moto-taxis can be hired in Gonaïves.

The town is small and walkable. Moto-taxis (25–50 HTG / US$0.20–0.35) connect Ennery to surrounding villages and farms.

  • Valley views — The hillside location offers panoramic views of the Artibonite Valley, the rice paddies, and the Gulf of Gonâve in the distance.

  • Coffee farms — Small-scale coffee cultivation is visible in the surrounding hills.

  • Rural landscape — A patchwork of farms, forests, and mountain villages characterises the area.

  • Hiking — Mountain trails connect Ennery to surrounding communities, with scenic walks through farms and forest patches.

Where to eat?

Food is basic — diri ak pwa (rice and beans), root vegetables, and fresh produce. Street vendors sell simple meals for 100–200 HTG (US$0.70–1.50). There are no formal restaurants.

Where to drink?

Fresh Haitian coffee is the local specialty. Prestige beer may be available at small bars. Do not drink tap water.

  • Budget: Limited — basic guesthouses may offer rooms for 500–1,000 HTG (US$3.50–7). Most visitors day-trip from Gonaïves.
  • Mid-range / Upscale: No accommodation available.

A small local market sells produce, coffee beans, and household goods. Coffee can be purchased directly from farmers.
