About L'Estere

L'Estère is a market town in the heart of the Artibonite rice-growing plains, located on the Artibonite River approximately 15 km southeast of Gonaïves. The town is a central hub for the rice economy — farmers from the surrounding paddies bring their harvest here for sale and processing. The population is roughly 20,000, and the economy is almost entirely agricultural.

The climate is tropical and humid, with temperatures averaging 28–33°C (82–91°F). The landscape is flat and dominated by irrigated rice paddies. L'Estère has a lively local market that serves the farming communities of the Artibonite Valley.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Toussaint Louverture (PAP) in Port-au-Prince, approximately 135 km south (3–4 hours by road). There is no air service to L'Estère.

By Train

There is no railway service in Haiti.

By Car / Road

L'Estère is accessible from Gonaïves via secondary roads heading southeast (approximately 15 km, 20–30 minutes). From Saint-Marc: approximately 70 km north (1.5–2 hours). Roads are partially paved but deteriorate to unpaved tracks.

The town is small and walkable. Moto-taxis (25–50 HTG / US$0.20–0.35) are available for trips to surrounding farms.
