Desdunes

Artibonite, Haiti

Why visit Desdunes?

Desdunes is a small agricultural commune in the heart of the Artibonite rice-growing plains, located approximately 20 km south of Gonaïves. The town sits on the flat, irrigated floodplain of the Artibonite River, surrounded by rice paddies that stretch to the horizon. The population is roughly 15,000, and the economy is almost entirely agricultural — rice cultivation dominates, with farmers using traditional irrigation channels fed by the Artibonite River.

The climate is tropical and humid, with temperatures averaging 28–33°C (82–91°F). The rainy season (April–June, August–October) brings flooding risks to the low-lying plains. Desdunes is a quiet, rural community with minimal infrastructure and no tourism facilities.
