Why visit?

Norte (North) is a province in northwestern Guinea-Bissau, stretching from the Cacheu River basin to the Senegalese border. Its landscape is a mosaic of mangroves along the coast, palm-studded savanna inland, and the vast tidal flats of the Cacheu River estuary. The province is home to the Papel, Manjaco, and Felupe ethnic groups, and its history as a Portuguese slave-trade centre gives it a deep colonial heritage.

The main attractions are the historic town of Cacheu with its 16th-century fort and the Cacheu River Mangroves Natural Park, a protected wetland rich in birdlife. The province also offers colonial-era mission churches, lively market towns like Canchungo, and the quiet Atlantic beaches near Safim and Prabis.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season (November–May) is best for travel, when roads are passable and the mangrove creeks are navigable. The wet season (June–October) brings heavy rain that can flood secondary roads. January–February is the coolest period.

Tell us your dates and we'll shape a Norte route around them.

How do you get around?

The main highway from Bissau north to Canchungo and Cacheu is paved and in good condition. Sept-place shared taxis run frequently between Bissau and the main towns. From Canchungo, secondary roads branch west to Cacheu and east to Farim. A 4x4 is useful for exploring the Cacheu River Mangroves park and the more remote coastal areas.

What should you eat?

The cuisine of Norte draws on fresh fish from the Cacheu River and Atlantic coast, rice, and palm oil. Grilled fish with onion and tomato sauce (peixe grelhado) is a staple. The region is known for its palm wine (vinho de palma) and cashew juice. Markets in Canchungo and Cacheu offer fresh seafood and tropical fruit.

What is the culture like?

The Papel people celebrate the Cacheu Festival with traditional music and dance. Catholic feast days in Cacheu and Canchungo draw large crowds. The mangrove forests hold spiritual significance for local communities, and traditional beliefs remain strong alongside Islam and Christianity.

Travelling during a festival? We'll plan around the crowds.
