Canchungo

Canchungo is the main commercial centre of Norte Province, located inland from Cacheu at a key road junction. It is a bustling market town with a predominantly Manjaco and Papel population. The town serves as the transport hub for the northwest — travellers pass through Canchungo en route to Cacheu, Sao Domingos, and the Senegalese border. It has better accommodation and dining options than Cacheu, making it a practical base for exploring the region.

The nearest airport is Osvaldo Vieira International Airport (OXB) in Bissau, about 80 km south. Sept-place taxis run frequently from Bissau (1.5 hours).

By Car / Road

Canchungo is on the paved highway from Bissau north to Cacheu. The road is in very good condition. Sept-place taxis and minibuses connect Canchungo with Bissau, Cacheu, and Sao Domingos.

The town is walkable. Motorcycle-taxis are available for short trips.

The lively market is the main attraction. Colonial-era buildings are scattered through the town centre.

Shop at the market and arrange onward transport to Cacheu or the coast.

Canchungo has better restaurants than Cacheu. Local dishes include grilled fish, rice, and sauces.

Small bars serve beer, soft drinks, and palm wine.
