Why visit Princess Town?
Princess Town (Princes Town) is a small coastal fishing town in the Western Region between Axim and Cape Three Points, named for the fort built above it. A Brandenburger (German) expedition built the fort here in 1683, naming it Fort Fredericksburg after Prince Frederick William I of Brandenburg — it remains the only fort of German construction on the Ghanaian coast. The Akan merchant John Konny held the fort against Dutch takeover for nearly 20 years before it fell in 1725, when the Dutch renamed it Fort Hollandia; it later passed to Britain in 1872 and became part of independent Ghana in 1957. Like other Gold Coast forts, it was used in the Atlantic slave trade — an estimated 300,000 Africans are thought to have passed through it. Today Princess Town is a quiet fishing village beneath the fort's ruins.
