Why visit Prestea?

Prestea is a gold-mining town of around 36,000 people on the west bank of the Ankobra River in the Western Region interior, roughly 50 km inland from the coast. Gold has been mined here since 1873, and Prestea grew into a major industrial mining site from 1929 onward; after independence the mines were nationalized under Kwame Nkrumah's government as the State Gold Mining Corporation. Mining shifted from underground shafts to open-pit surface operations in the early 2000s and remains the town's economic backbone today. Prestea is part of the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipal District.
