Kartong

Western, Gambia

Why visit Kartong?

Kartong is the Gambia's southernmost town, barely a mile from the Casamance (Senegal) border, with a relaxed, remote feel compared to the resort strip further north. Its main landmark is the Folonko sacred crocodile pool, reputedly nearly 600 years old and the oldest of the country's three sacred crocodile pools (alongside Kachikally in Bakau and Berending). Custodianship belongs to the Jaiteh family, and around ten crocodiles live semi-wild in the lily-choked pool, which — like the other sacred pools — is primarily visited as a fertility shrine.
