Tanji

Western, Gambia

Why visit Tanji?

Tanji is a fishing village in the Kombo South district of Western Region, south of Brufut, home to Mandinka, Wolof, Jola, and Serer fishing communities. The beach is a working fishing port where colourful pirogues land their catch — one of the best places in The Gambia to see traditional fishing. Tanji Bird Reserve, established in 1993 about 3 km north of the village along the Karinti River, protects coastal wetlands and the Bijol Islands offshore; around 300 bird species have been recorded there, including Gambia's only breeding seabird colonies.
