Why visit Kango?

Kango is a town on the Komo River at the eastern edge of Estuaire province, about 80 km east of Libreville on the N1 highway. It serves as an important centre for the timber trade, with logs floated down the Komo River for transport to the port of Owendo. The town is a common stopover for travellers heading inland to Lambarene and the interior. The surrounding landscape is a mix of secondary forest, small farms, and riparian vegetation.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Libreville Leon Mba International Airport (LBV) is 80 km west. Access is by road — there is no airport in Kango.

By Car / Road

Kango is on the N1 highway, 80 km east of Libreville. Shared taxis from Libreville: CFA 4,000-6,000 (about 1.5-2 hours). Buses also run along this route.

The town is compact and walkable. Shared taxis serve the surrounding villages.

What are the things to do?

  • Komo River — The wide river flowing past the town, used for log transport. Timber barges and traditional pirogues are a common sight.

  • Kango Market — A small but lively market selling local produce, smoked fish, and household goods.

Small restaurants (maquis) serve poulet nyembwe (chicken in palm butter), grilled fish with rice or fufu, and fried plantains. Meals are simple and freshly prepared.
