Pongara National Park

Pongara National Park protects the Pongara peninsula on the south side of the Gabon Estuary, opposite Libreville. The park encompasses beach, coastal forest, and savannah habitats, and is known for its nesting sea turtles (November-March), forest elephants that sometimes roam the beach, and excellent birdwatching.

The park is accessible by boat from Libreville (30 min crossing). Taxis from Libreville to the boat jetty cost CFA 3,000-5,000. Boat transfer costs around CFA 15,000-25,000 per person.

Walking on the beach and guided hikes through the forest are the main modes of exploration. A 4x4 can be arranged through lodges.

• Pointe-Denis Beach — A long sandy beach at the tip of the peninsula.

• Turtle Nesting Sites — Leatherback and olive ridley turtles nest on the beach.

• Coastal Forest Trails — Short hikes through the forest interior.

• Guided night walks to watch sea turtles nest (November-March).

• Birdwatching in the forest and along the estuary.

• Swimming at Pointe-Denis (check for currents).

Lodges in the park serve meals. There are no independent restaurants.

Lodges provide drinks. Bring bottled water.

• Mid-range: Ecolodge de Pointe-Denis; CFA 40,000-60,000 per night full board.

There are no shops inside the park. The lodge sells basic supplies.

• Libreville (30 min by boat) — The capital city.
• Akanda National Park (on the opposite shore of the estuary).
