Koumac

Koumac is a town on the northwest coast of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, situated on a large bay known for its nickel-mining history. It is a service center for the surrounding rural area and a gateway to the Belep Islands. The town has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere with stretches of sandy coastline.

Koumac is about 340 km north of Nouméa via RT1, roughly a 4-hour drive. Air Calédonie flies to Koumac Airport from Nouméa. Buses run from Nouméa daily.

A car is necessary for getting around the Koumac area. The town itself is small. Taxis are limited. Boat trips to the Belep Islands depart from here.

Koumac offers a few hotels, guesthouses, and gîtes. Accommodation can be limited, so advance booking is recommended.

The Friday and Saturday market sells tropical fruit, vegetables, coffee, and local crafts. Handicrafts from the Belep Islands are occasionally available.
