Koumac is a town on the northwest coast of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, situated on a large bay known for its nickel-mining history. It is a service center for the surrounding rural area and a gateway to the Belep Islands. The town has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere with stretches of sandy coastline.

How to reach

Koumac is about 340 km north of Nouméa via RT1, roughly a 4-hour drive. Air Calédonie flies to Koumac Airport from Nouméa. Buses run from Nouméa daily.

A car is necessary for getting around the Koumac area. The town itself is small. Taxis are limited. Boat trips to the Belep Islands depart from here.
