Varska
Põlvamaa, Estonia
Why visit Varska?
Värska is a village in south-eastern Põlvamaa, situated on the western shore of Lake Peipus near the Russian border. With a population of around 400, it is the cultural heart of Setomaa — the traditional homeland of the Seto people, an Orthodox Finno-Ugric minority with its own language, singing tradition, and customs. Värska is famous for its mineral-water springs, which have given rise to a modern spa complex that draws visitors year-round.
The village has a distinctly Seto character: the Orthodox chapel (tsässon), the Seto museum, and the presence of the Seto language on signs and in daily conversation all mark it as a place apart from the rest of Estonia. The surrounding landscape of pine forest, Lake Peipus shoreline, and agricultural fields is peaceful and flat. The best time to visit is June through August, when the spa is at its best and Seto cultural events take place in the area. The Seto Kingdom Day festival in August is a particularly colourful time to visit.
