Polva
Põlvamaa, Estonia
About Polva
Põlva is the capital of Põlvamaa, a small county town in south-eastern Estonia situated approximately 60 km south of Tartu. With a population of around 5,500, it is a quiet administrative and service centre set on the shores of Lake Põlva (Põlva järv). The town grew around its medieval church, and its compact centre retains a calm, small-town atmosphere.
The surrounding area is characterised by rolling hills, river valleys, and the distinctive sandstone gorges that make south-eastern Estonia's landscape more varied than much of the country. Põlva serves as a gateway to the natural wonders of the region — the Ahja River gorge at Taevaskoja, the Valgesoo bog, and the Seto cultural region of Värska and Setomaa. The best time to visit is late May through September, when the lakeside is pleasant and the nearby nature attractions are fully accessible.
