Rapina

Põlvamaa, Estonia

About Rapina

Räpina is a small town in southern Põlvamaa, situated on the Võhandu River approximately 25 km south-east of Põlva and 10 km from the Lake Peipus shore. With a population of around 2,200, it is best known for two things: its historic paper mill, one of the oldest continuously operating industrial enterprises in Estonia, and its arboretum — the oldest in Estonia, established in the 19th century.

The town's centrepiece is the Räpina Manor complex, a beautifully landscaped estate set around a pond, the Võhandu River, and the arboretum's exotic tree collection. The paper mill, founded in 1838 and still producing high-quality paper, adds an interesting industrial heritage dimension. The surrounding landscape is a mix of river valleys, forests, and the flat meadows approaching Lake Peipus. The best time to visit is May through September, when the arboretum is at its most colourful and the river offers canoeing opportunities.
