Taevaskoja
Põlvamaa, Estonia
Why visit Taevaskoja?
Taevaskoja is a natural landmark and small settlement in north-western Põlvamaa, situated on the Ahja River approximately 13 km north-west of Põlva. It is home to the most famous sandstone outcrops in Estonia — the Suur Taevaskoda (Great Heaven's House) and Väike Taevaskoda (Small Heaven's House) — towering 20-metre-high cliffs of golden-brown Devonian sandstone that rise dramatically from the clear waters of the Ahja River.
The area has been a protected nature reserve since 1959 and is one of the most popular natural attractions in southern Estonia. The sandstone cliffs, shaped by thousands of years of river erosion, have deep crevices, overhangs, and small caves that have inspired local legends. The surrounding forest of pine, spruce, and birch completes the picture of a quintessentially Estonian natural landscape. The best time to visit is May through September, when the trails are dry and the river is warm enough for swimming. Autumn, when the forest turns gold, is also spectacular.

What are the things to do?
Suur Taevaskoda (Great Heaven's House) — The larger of the two main sandstone outcrops, rising 20 metres above the river. The cliff face has a distinctive overhang and a small cave at its base. A viewing platform offers a panoramic view across the river.
Väike Taevaskoda (Small Heaven's House) — A slightly smaller but equally impressive sandstone cliff, located 500 metres upstream from the great outcrop. The rock face has deep vertical crevices and a small waterfall in spring.
Ahja River Gorge — The entire section of the Ahja River between the two outcrops is a scenic gorge with rapids, deep pools, and forested banks.
Taevaskoja Nature Reserve — The protected area around the gorge has marked hiking trails, information boards about the geology and ecology, and several picnic spots.
Saesaare Dam — A small hydroelectric dam on the Ahja River, 1 km downstream from the parking area, with a footbridge and views of the river.
Walk the Taevaskoja trail — The 3 km loop trail from the parking area covers both outcrops, the riverside, and the forest. Allow 1–1.5 hours.
Swimming in the Ahja River — The deep, clear pools at the base of the cliffs are popular swimming spots in summer. Use caution — the water is cold even in July.
Photography — The sandstone cliffs are most photogenic in the early morning or late afternoon light.
Picnicking — Several designated picnic spots are available in the reserve. Take all rubbish with you.
Canoeing — The Ahja River's calm stretches are suitable for canoeing; bring your own equipment.
Wild swimming — For the adventurous, the river's deep pools offer a classic Estonian wild swimming experience.
