Ahja
Põlvamaa, Estonia
About Ahja
Ahja is a small village in north-western Põlvamaa, situated on the Ahja River approximately 15 km north-west of Põlva. With a population of around 500, it is best known as the gateway to one of Estonia's most spectacular natural attractions — the Ahja River gorge and the Taevaskoja sandstone outcrops, which begin just south of the village.
The Ahja River has carved dramatic sandstone cliffs and rapids through the soft Devonian sandstone of south-eastern Estonia, creating a landscape of towering golden-brown rock walls, deep pools, and forested riverbanks. The area around Ahja is a protected nature reserve, with well-maintained hiking trails. The village itself is quiet and rural, with a small shop and a bus stop. Summer is the best time to visit, though the gorge is beautiful year-round.
