Overview

Estonia is the northernmost and most digitally advanced of the Baltic states. Its capital Tallinn has one of Europe's best-preserved medieval old towns, a UNESCO World Heritage site of cobbled streets, gothic spires, and merchant houses. Beyond Tallinn, Estonia offers thousands of forested islands (Saaremaa, Hiiumaa), bogs and national parks ideal for hiking, and the university city of Tartu, the intellectual heart of the country. Estonia was the first country to offer e-residency and online voting, blending medieval charm with cutting-edge digital infrastructure.

Geography & Climate

Estonia is low-lying, with a long coastline deeply indented by the Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Riga, and the Baltic Sea. There are over 2,000 islands; the largest are Saaremaa and Hiiumaa. Landscapes alternate between northern limestone cliffs (glint), pine forests, and peat bogs with raised platforms. The climate is temperate maritime: mild summers (15–22°C), cold winters (-2 to -8°C with frequent snow). Days are very long in June (18+ hours of daylight), very short in December (6 hours).

When to Visit

May–September is the best time. Tallinn Old Town is busiest July–August. June brings the White Night Festival and Jaaniõhtu (Midsummer). January–February offers winter sports and ice skating in Tallinn. The Tallinn Christmas Market (December) is one of Europe's finest.

Visa & Entry

Estonia is a Schengen Area member. EU/EEA/Swiss, US, UK, Canada, Australia, and others visa-free for 90 days. Estonia's e-residency programme allows non-residents a government-issued digital ID for business.

Getting Around

By bus: The main intercity mode; frequent comfortable coaches (Lux Express, Ecolines). By train: Elron operates modern electric and diesel trains connecting Tallinn, Tartu, Narva, and Viljandi. By ferry: Regular routes to Saaremaa, Hiiumaa, and other islands. By car: Roads are in good condition; toll-free. By bike: Tallinn and Tartu are bike-friendly with rental schemes.

Culture & Etiquette

Estonians are reserved and private — they value personal space and quiet. A handshake is standard. Silence in public is normal, not awkward. Remove shoes indoors. The country is predominantly Lutheran and non-religious. Estonian is the state language, closely related to Finnish; Russian is spoken by the minority population. English is widely spoken by younger people. Digital etiquette is advanced — expect to use online portals for everything. Do not assume shared history with Latvia or Lithuania — Estonia identifies culturally with Nordic countries.

Very safe. Estonia has one of Europe's lowest crime rates. Emergency: 112. Tap water is safe. Be cautious on frozen bogs and ice roads in winter.
