Faraskur

Dumyāţ, Egypt

Why visit Faraskur?

Faraskur is a town in Damietta Governorate on the Nile Delta, one of the governorate's main administrative subdivisions (part of neighbouring Dakahlia Governorate before the 1952 revolution). It carries two notable chapters of Egyptian history: it was the site of the last major battle of the Seventh Crusade, where the Ayyubid Sultan Turanshah's forces defeated the army of King Louis IX of France in 1250; and in March 1919, during the nationwide revolution against British occupation, the town briefly declared independence — residents stormed the police station, cut telegraph lines, and dismantled railway tracks, and a local leader, Hafiz Donya, was proclaimed king of what became known for almost three months as the "Kingdom of Faraskur."
