Why visit Kafr El Battikh?

Kafr El Battikh ("Village of the Watermelons") is a city of around 47,000 people on the eastern bank of the Nile in Damietta Governorate, split by the Al Balamoon Canal, and serves as capital of its own markaz (district). Its older name, Bura, came from the Coptic word for grey mullet, reflecting its origins as a fishing settlement before it shifted to watermelon cultivation and trade under Ottoman rule, giving the town its current name; it was formally granted city status in 2008. The local economy today rests on agriculture (palm and guava groves, a regional produce market) alongside woodworking, furniture-making, and textiles — trades shared with nearby Damietta city.
