Zongo

Sud-Ubangi, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Zongo?

Zongo sits on the south bank of the Ubangi River directly across from Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, and is linked to it by ferry. It was once a more significant transport hub, but river traffic shifted eastward from the late 1980s onward and the town's importance as a crossing point has declined since. During the Central African Republic's 2012–13 conflict, Zongo received refugees fleeing Bangui, including relatives of former CAR president François Bozizé. Today the local economy centers on agriculture, fishing, and cross-river small-scale trade. The climate is tropical with a rainy and a dry season.
