Why visit Gemena?

Gemena is the capital of Sud-Ubangi province and one of the larger towns in northwestern DRC, with a population above 350,000. It sits near the Ubangi River amid rainforest and savanna, and functions as a hub for river trade and for coffee and palm oil grown in the surrounding area; it also hosts a military garrison and a large airport. Mama Yemo, the mother of longtime president Mobutu Sese Seko, died in Gemena in 1971 and is commemorated there with a large mausoleum, a notable point of local history. The population is drawn mainly from Ngbaka and Ngbandi communities. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season and a dry season.
