Why visit?

Sud-Ubangi is a province in northwestern DRC, created in the 2015 territorial split of the former Équateur Province. Its capital and largest town is Gemena (population over 350,000), a river-trade hub on the Ubangi where Mobutu Sese Seko's mother, Mama Yemo, is buried in a large mausoleum. The province is split into territories including Gemena, Budjala, Kungu, and Libenge, and lies along the Ubangi River, which forms the border with the Central African Republic to the north; the Republic of the Congo lies to the west across the Congo River basin. Akula, on the Mongala River, is the province's main river port, evacuating local produce toward Kisangani and Kinshasa. The population includes Ngbaka and Ngbandi peoples; Lingala is widely spoken.
