Tshela
Kongo Central, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Why visit Tshela?
Tshela is a town in the interior of Kongo Central province, located in the palm oil-producing heartland of the region. The town is a market center for the surrounding agricultural area, which is dominated by palm oil plantations and cassava cultivation. With a population of around 20,000, Tshela has a rural, traditional character that contrasts with the coastal towns.
The area is known for its palm oil production, which has been a commercial crop since the colonial era. The landscape is characterized by palm groves, cassava fields, and secondary forest. The climate is tropical with year-round temperatures of 25–30°C and a wet season from October to May. Tshela offers a glimpse into the agricultural heartland of the Kongo people, with traditional village life still very much alive.
The town serves as a junction point on roads leading to the coast and to other interior settlements. Its markets are vibrant centers of local commerce, where palm oil, cassava, and other agricultural products are traded.
