Boma
Kongo Central, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Why visit Boma?
Boma is a city in Kongo Central province, situated on the banks of the Congo River approximately 170 km east of Matadi. With a population of around 160,000, it holds an important place in Congolese history as a former capital of the Congo Free State and later the Belgian Congo's province of Bas-Congo. The city was the administrative center before the capital was moved to Matadi in the early 20th century.
Boma's waterfront location on the Congo River gives it a distinctive character, with a mix of colonial-era buildings, trading houses, and lively riverside markets. The city has a more relaxed pace than Matadi and offers a window into the province's trading and missionary history. The climate is tropical, with year-round temperatures of 25–30°C and a wet season from October to May.
The city center is compact and walkable, with the main commercial streets running parallel to the river. Boma serves as a market town for the surrounding agricultural region, and its markets are among the most vibrant in the province.

By Car / Road
Boma is accessible from Matadi via Route nationale 1 (N1), a distance of approximately 170 km. The road is paved but can be rough in sections, and the journey takes 4–6 hours by car depending on conditions. Shared taxis and buses also operate on this route. From Kinshasa, Boma is approximately 500 km by road.
Boma's city center is compact enough to explore on foot. Boda-boda (motorcycle taxis) are the primary means of getting around the city and to nearby areas.
