Banana

Kongo Central, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Banana?

Banana is a small coastal town in Kongo Central province, located on the Atlantic shore at the mouth of the Congo River. It is the DRC's only port on the Atlantic Ocean and serves as a vital outlet for the country's trade. Despite its strategic importance, Banana remains a modest frontier town with a population of around 10,000, characterized by a mix of fishing communities, port workers, and traders.

The town's name derives from the banana palms that grow abundantly in the area. Banana's beach stretches along the Atlantic coast, offering one of the few places in the DRC where the ocean meets the shore. The atmosphere is laid-back and tropical, with warm temperatures year-round (25–30°C) and a pronounced wet season from October to May. The town has a distinct frontier character, with a mix of Congolese, Angolan, and other West African influences reflecting its position as a border and trading point.

The Congo River estuary near Banana is a dynamic environment where freshwater meets the Atlantic, creating rich mangrove ecosystems and supporting diverse birdlife. The area is sparsely populated outside the town center, with fishing villages scattered along the coast and riverbanks.

How do you get there?

By Car / Road

Banana is the western terminus of Route nationale 1 (N1), approximately 180 km west of Matadi. The road is paved but can be rough in sections, and the journey takes 4–6 hours by car. Shared taxis and occasional buses operate on this route. Banana is near the Angolan border, and the Angolan town of Mocamedes (Namibe) is accessible by boat across the Congo estuary, though border crossing procedures are complex.

Banana is small enough to walk through entirely. Boda-boda (motorcycle taxis) are available for trips to nearby areas and the beach. The town's roads are a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces. For trips along the coast or to fishing villages, local boatmen can be hired.
