Inga
Kongo Central, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Why visit Inga?
Inga is a location in Kongo Central province best known for the Inga hydroelectric complex and the spectacular Inga Falls, where the Congo River thunders through a narrow rocky canyon with exceptional force. The Inga sites are located along the Congo River approximately 40 km upstream from Matadi. The area is sparsely populated and centered around the hydroelectric infrastructure.
The Inga Falls (also known as Livingstone Falls at this stretch) are among the most powerful waterfalls in the world in terms of flow volume. The Congo River here narrows dramatically and drops through a series of rapids and cataracts, creating an awe-inspiring natural spectacle. The Inga Dam complex — consisting of Inga I and Inga II dams — was built to harness this immense hydroelectric potential, though the project has faced numerous challenges and the full Grand Inga scheme remains one of the world's largest unrealized engineering projects.
The area has a stark, industrial character around the dam infrastructure, but the surrounding landscape is one of tropical forest and rocky river gorges. The climate is tropical, with year-round temperatures of 25–30°C.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to eat?
There are no restaurants or food vendors at the Inga Dam complex. Day-trippers from Matadi should bring a packed lunch and plenty of drinking water. The nearest reliable dining options are in Matadi, approximately 40 km downstream, where hotels and market stalls serve Congolese fare. If staying at a guesthouse in a nearby village, meals may be arranged in advance with the host.
Where to drink?
Bottled water is essential and must be brought from Matadi — there is no potable water available at the Inga site. Soft drinks and beer can occasionally be found at small kiosks in the adjacent villages, but availability is unreliable. Pack extra water and any desired beverages for the trip.

Ask on WhatsAppWhere to stay?
Accommodation at Inga is extremely limited to non-existent for independent travelers. The dam complex has no tourist lodgings. Most visitors stay in Matadi (approximately 40 km downstream) and visit Inga as a day trip. The mid-range Hotel Métropole or Auberge de la Paix in Matadi are the closest reliable options.
What should you buy?
There are no shopping facilities at the Inga Dam complex itself. Visitors should bring all necessary supplies from Matadi before arriving. The small local settlements near Inga have modest kiosks selling basic items — bottled water, biscuits, and soap — but do not expect anything approaching a proper store. Fresh produce and prepared meals are not available for purchase on-site.
