Mbanza-Ngungu

Kongo Central, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Mbanza-Ngungu?

Mbanza-Ngungu (formerly Thysville) is an inland town in Kongo Central province, located approximately 200 km northeast of Matadi along Route nationale 1. With a population of around 50,000, it is best known for the spectacular Thysville Caves (Grottes de Thysville), a vast network of limestone caves that is one of the most impressive natural attractions in the DRC.

The town sits at a slightly higher elevation than the coastal lowlands, giving it marginally cooler temperatures (22–28°C) and a more temperate feel. Mbanza-Ngungu has a history as a Belgian colonial administrative center, and its layout reflects colonial-era planning with wide streets and administrative buildings. The town serves as a market center for the surrounding agricultural region, which produces palm oil, cassava, and coffee.

The Thysville Caves are the main draw — a labyrinth of underground chambers, stalactites, and underground rivers that extend for several kilometers. The caves have been a tourist attraction since the colonial era and remain one of the most accessible cave systems in Central Africa.
