Bartolome Maso

Granma, Cuba

Why visit Bartolome Maso?

Bartolomé Masó is a small town in Granma Province, located at the foot of the Sierra Maestra mountains south of Bayamo. Named after the Cuban independence war general Bartolomé Masó Márquez (1830–1907), who was born here, the town has a population of approximately 5,000. It serves as a gateway to the Sierra Maestra and the Comandancia de la Plata, the guerrilla headquarters used by Fidel Castro during the 1950s revolution.

The town sits at the transition between the flat agricultural lowlands and the steep mountain slopes of the Sierra Maestra. Coffee and fruit cultivation are important in the surrounding hills. The atmosphere is quiet and rural.

Tropical climate with higher rainfall in the mountains. Dry season November–April, rainy season May–October. The mountain proximity brings cooler nights.
