Why visit Buey Arriba?

Buey Arriba is a small mountain town in Granma Province, located in the Sierra Maestra foothills south of Bayamo. The town has a population of approximately 3,000 and sits at a higher elevation than the surrounding lowlands, offering cooler temperatures and lush mountain vegetation. Buey Arriba is known for its coffee production and its proximity to the Sierra Maestra National Park.

The town is the starting point for expeditions into the Sierra Maestra, including treks to Pico Turquino (1,974 m), Cuba's highest peak. The surrounding landscape is mountainous, with coffee plantations, cloud forest, and pine forests at higher elevations.

Tropical mountain climate, cooler and wetter than the lowlands. Dry season November–April, rainy season May–October. Mountain weather can be unpredictable; bring layers and rain gear.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is in Bayamo (BYM), about 40 km north.

By Car / Road

Buey Arriba is about 40 km south of Bayamo via a secondary road through the mountains (approximately 1.5 hours). The road is paved but steep and winding. A 4WD is recommended, especially in the rainy season.

The town is small and walkable. For Sierra Maestra expeditions, a guide and appropriate gear are essential.

What are the things to do?

  • Sierra Maestra scenery — The surrounding mountains offer dramatic landscapes of cloud forest, coffee plantations, and mountain ridges.

  • Pico Turquino — Cuba's highest peak (1,974 m), accessible via multi-day treks from Buey Arriba.

  • Coffee plantations — The area produces some of Cuba's finest mountain coffee.

  • Pico Turquino trek — The classic multi-day hike to Cuba's summit. Guides are mandatory; arrange through the local park office or your casa particular. The trek takes 2–3 days with overnight stops at campamentos.

  • Day hikes — Shorter trails in the foothills offer scenic walks through coffee farms and forest.

  • Coffee farm visits — Learn about mountain coffee cultivation at local farms.

  • Birdwatching — The mountain forests harbour endemic species including the Cuban trogon.

  • Mid-range: Campamento accommodation in the Sierra Maestra for trekkers (basic dormitory-style, CUC 10–20/night).
  • Upscale / Upscale: No hotels. Bayamo (40 km) has options.

Coffee can be purchased from local farmers. Otherwise, very limited shopping.
