Bayamo

Granma, Cuba

Why visit Bayamo?

Bayamo is the capital of Granma Province and one of Cuba's most historically significant cities. Founded in 1513, it is the second-oldest Spanish settlement on the island and played a central role in Cuba's independence movement. During the Ten Years' War (1868–1878), Cuban patriots famously set fire to their own city rather than surrender it to Spanish forces — an act commemorated in the Cuban national anthem, whose lyrics were written by Bayamo native Perucho Figueredo.

Today, Bayamo is a pleasant city of approximately 230,000 people with a largely pedestrianised historic centre. The city has a relaxed, provincial atmosphere with wide plazas, colonial churches, and horse-drawn carriages sharing the streets with cyclists. The surrounding Sierra Maestra foothills provide a dramatic backdrop.

Tropical climate with dry season November–April and rainy season May–October. The best months to visit are December through March. Bayamo can be hot and humid in summer, with temperatures regularly exceeding 32°C.
