Why visit Candelaria?

Candelaria is a municipality and town in Artemisa Province, western Cuba, located approximately 60 km west of Havana in the fertile lowlands south of the Sierra del Rosario. The town is an agricultural centre known for sugarcane, tobacco, and fruit production.

The municipality has a population of around 20,000 and retains a quiet, rural character. The town centre has a modest plaza, a parish church, and typical small-town Cuban architecture. The surrounding landscape includes flat agricultural land to the south and the foothills of the Sierra del Rosario biosphere reserve to the north.

Tropical climate with a wet season (May–October) and a drier season (November–April). Temperatures average 25–30°C year-round.

How do you get there?

By Plane

José Martí International Airport (HAV) in Havana is the nearest airport, approximately 60 km east. A taxi costs around CUC 50–60 and takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.

By Car / Road

Candelaria is accessible from Havana via the Carretera Central or roads from the A1 autopista through Artemisa. The drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. The Viazul bus from Havana to Pinar del Río passes through the area; ask the driver to stop at the junction near Candelaria.

The town is small and walkable. Bici-taxis provide local transport. For trips to the Sierra del Rosario, a taxi or private vehicle is needed.

Several paladares in town serve Creole cuisine. The state-run restaurant near the highway junction offers basic meals.

A small supermarket and fruit/vegetable market operate in town. For banking services, there is a bank branch in Candelaria (no ETECSA or Cadeca). Basic goods and produce are available at local stalls.
