Güira de Melena is a municipality and town in Artemisa Province, western Cuba, located approximately 50 km south of Havana near the coast of the Bay of Batabanó. The town has been an agricultural centre since colonial times, known for sugarcane, tobacco, and tropical fruit production.

The municipality has a population of around 40,000 and is one of the more significant agricultural towns in the province. The town centre features a central plaza, a parish church, and a mix of colonial and modern buildings. The southern part of the municipality extends to the mangrove-lined coast of the Bay of Batabanó.

Tropical climate with a wet season (May–October) and a drier season (November–April). Temperatures average 25–31°C throughout the year.

How do you get there?

By Plane

José Martí International Airport (HAV) in Havana is the nearest major airport, approximately 50 km north. A taxi from the airport takes about 1 hour and costs around CUC 40–50.

By Car / Road

Güira de Melena is accessible from Havana via the Carretera Central or roads branching from the A1 autopista through Artemisa. The drive takes approximately 1 hour. Local buses and colectivos connect the town with Havana and Artemisa.

The town centre is walkable. Bici-taxis and horse-drawn carts provide local transport. For coastal excursions, a taxi or private vehicle is recommended.
