Mariel
Artemisa, Cuba
Why visit Mariel?
Mariel is a port town and municipality in Artemisa Province, western Cuba, situated on the northern coast about 50 km west of Havana. The town is built around a natural harbour that has served as a port since colonial times and gained international attention during the 1980 Mariel boatlift.
The municipality has a population of approximately 45,000. In recent years, Mariel has been transformed by the construction of the Mariel Special Development Zone (Zona Especial de Desarrollo del Mariel), Cuba's largest infrastructure project, which includes a modern container port and industrial zone backed by Brazilian investment.
The climate is tropical maritime, with cooling sea breezes. The wet season runs from May to October, with the drier months from November to April being the most pleasant for visiting.
