La Union
Cartago, Costa Rica
Why visit La Union?
La Unión is a small district and canton in the northern part of Cartago Province, Costa Rica, situated at the base of the foothills leading to Irazú Volcano. The canton is one of the smaller administrative divisions in the province, characterised by a mix of suburban residential areas and agricultural land. Its proximity to Cartago city — just a few kilometres to the south — means it functions largely as a commuter settlement while retaining a distinct small-town identity.
The area was historically part of the agricultural hinterland of Cartago, with dairy farming and coffee cultivation as the main economic activities. The canton was established in 1948 and has grown steadily as Cartago's urban area expanded. Today, the district of Tres Ríos, which lies within the canton, is the commercial and administrative centre.
La Unión enjoys the mild highland climate typical of the Central Valley, with temperatures averaging 18–22°C year-round. The dry season from December to April offers the clearest weather, while the rainy season (May–November) brings regular afternoon showers. The area sits at approximately 1,300–1,500 m elevation.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela, about 50 km west — roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road. No direct public transport connects the airport to La Unión; take a taxi or shared shuttle to Cartago first, then a local bus.
By Car / Road
From Cartago city, La Unión is approximately 5–8 km north via Route 10 or local roads — about 10–15 minutes. From San José, take the Interamericana (Route 2) east through Cartago, then north; total about 35 km (40–55 minutes depending on traffic). Local buses run regularly from Cartago's terminal to the canton.
The canton is small enough to navigate by foot or taxi within the centre. For reaching outlying areas, local buses and colectivo taxis operate along main routes. A car is useful for visiting the more rural districts.
