Pacayas

Cartago, Costa Rica

Why visit Pacayas?

Pacayas is a small town and the administrative centre of Alvarado Canton in Cartago Province, Costa Rica. Perched in the highland hills at roughly 1,600 m elevation, Pacayas is a quiet agricultural community surrounded by coffee plantations, dairy farms, and vegetable gardens. The town serves as the hub for the canton's scattered rural population.

The area has a long history of agriculture, with coffee introduced in the 19th century and dairy farming following as the primary livelihood. Pacayas retains a traditional Costa Rican highland character — a small church, a central plaza, a handful of shops, and surrounding farms. The pace of life is slow and the atmosphere is authentically rural.

The climate is cool and pleasant, averaging 16–20°C, with a dry season from December to April and regular afternoon rains from May to November. Mornings can be misty and cool, especially at higher elevations within the canton.
