Orosi

Cartago, Costa Rica

Why visit Orosi?

Orosi is a picturesque village in the Paraíso canton of Cartago Province, Costa Rica, nestled in the lush Orosi Valley about 15 km south of Cartago city. Known for its colonial church — the oldest still-standing religious building in Costa Rica — and its proximity to Lankester Botanical Garden and Cachí Dam, Orosi is one of the most charming small settlements in the Central Valley.

The valley was inhabited by the Huetar people before Spanish colonization, and Orosi became one of the earliest Spanish settlements in the interior. The Dominican order established a mission here in the 18th century, and the Iglesia de San José de Orosi, built in 1743, is a beautifully preserved example of colonial religious architecture. The village remained small and agricultural through the centuries, with coffee and dairy as the mainstays.

Orosi sits at about 1,100 m elevation in a valley surrounded by forested hills. The climate is warm and pleasant, averaging 20–25°C, with a dry season from December to April and rains from May to November. The valley is noticeably warmer than nearby Cartago due to its lower elevation and sheltered position.
