Paraiso
Cartago, Costa Rica
Why visit Paraiso?
Paraíso is a small canton capital in the eastern part of Cartago Province, Costa Rica, nestled in the fertile Orosi Valley at roughly 1,300 m elevation. The town serves as a gateway to some of the province's most scenic highland terrain, including the Reventazón River valley and the foothills leading toward Irazú Volcano. Its name, meaning "paradise," reflects the lush, green character of the surrounding landscape, where coffee plantations and small dairy farms blanket the hillsides.
The canton of Paraíso encompasses several distinct districts, from the urban centre itself to the more rural communities of Santiago, Orosi, and Cachí. The area has a long agricultural tradition dating to the colonial era, when Spanish settlers established haciendas in the valley. Today, Paraíso retains a quiet, small-town Costa Rican character — a place of tiled roofs, church plazas, and weekend farmers' markets rather than tourist infrastructure.
The climate is typical of the Central Valley highlands: mild year-round with average temperatures around 18–22°C. The dry season (December to April) is the best time for hiking and volcano visits, while the green season (May to November) brings afternoon rains that keep the valley lush. The driest months are February and March.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela, approximately 45 km west — about 1 to 1.5 hours by road depending on traffic through San José and Cartago. No direct airport bus serves Paraíso; take a taxi or shuttle to Cartago, then a local bus.
By Car / Road
From Cartago city, take Route 2 south toward Paraíso — roughly 15 km, about 20 minutes. The road is paved and well-maintained, passing through agricultural land. From San José, drive east on the Interamericana (Route 2) through Cartago, then continue south; total distance is about 40 km (45–60 minutes). Regular bus services run from Cartago's central terminal to Paraíso; the ride takes approximately 30 minutes.
Paraíso's centre is compact and walkable. Local buses connect the centre to surrounding districts including Orosi and Cachí. Taxis are available at the central park. For exploring the valley and reaching trailheads, a rental car is the most practical option. Roads within the canton are mostly paved, though some rural routes are gravel.
