Tres Rios

Cartago, Costa Rica

Why visit Tres Rios?

Tres Ríos is a bustling town in La Unión Canton, Cartago Province, Costa Rica, serving as the canton's commercial and administrative centre. Located about 5 km northeast of Cartago city at roughly 1,300 m elevation, Tres Ríos has grown into a significant suburban hub, with shopping centres, restaurants, and services that cater to the wider Cartago metropolitan area.

The town's name ("Three Rivers") comes from the convergence of three small rivers in the area. Originally an agricultural settlement, Tres Ríos expanded rapidly in the late 20th century as Cartago's urban area merged with it. Today it functions as a practical base for exploring the province — close to Cartago's historical sites, the volcano road, and the Orosi Valley.

The climate is the mild highland pattern typical of the Central Valley: 18–22°C year-round, with a dry season from December to April and afternoon rains from May to November. The town is at about 1,350 m elevation.
