San Carlos
Alajuela, Costa Rica
Why visit San Carlos?
San Carlos, commonly known by its main city Ciudad Quesada, is a vast canton in the northern part of Alajuela Province encompassing some of Costa Rica's most diverse landscapes — from volcanic highlands to tropical lowlands. Ciudad Quesada (population ~40,000) sits at about 650 metres elevation and serves as the commercial and administrative hub for the northern region. The canton is home to Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica's most iconic landmarks, and the fertile San Carlos plain is the country's dairy heartland.
The climate varies dramatically with elevation: Ciudad Quesada is warm and humid (24–30 °C), while the Arenal area and lowlands near the Nicaraguan border are hotter (28–35 °C). Rainfall is significant year-round, making this one of the greenest regions in Costa Rica. The best weather window is February–April.
San Carlos is a gateway to Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna hot springs, the Caño Negro wetlands, and the northern lowlands. The region's agricultural wealth — dairy, rice, and tropical fruits — gives it a prosperous, well-developed feel.

By Plane
Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO IATA) is approximately 90 km south (1.5–2 hours by car). For those heading directly to La Fortuna/Arenal, the small La Fortuna airstrip (FON) handles charter and domestic flights (Sansa Airlines).
By Car / Road
From San José, take Route 32 through the Braulio Carrillo corridor to Guápiles, then Route 4 north to Ciudad Quesada — approximately 100 km, 2 hours. Alternatively, Route 1 north through Alajuela and then Route 140 northeast is longer but avoids the mountain pass. Buses from San José (Terminal 7-10, Transportes San Carlos company) run frequently to Ciudad Quesada (₡2,500, 2–2.5 hours).
Ciudad Quesada has a central bus terminal with connections to La Fortuna (1 hour), Upala, Los Chiles, and surrounding communities. Local taxis and colectivos (shared taxis) serve the canton. A rental car provides the most flexibility for exploring the Arenal area and beyond.
