Sarchi
Alajuela, Costa Rica
Why visit Sarchi?
Sarchí is Costa Rica's artisan capital, a charming town nestled in the hills of Alajuela Province at about 1,000 metres elevation. The town is famous throughout the country for its brightly painted oxcarts (carretas), which have become an iconic symbol of Costa Rican culture — the oxcart was declared a national symbol and the designs originated here. Today, Sarchí's workshops produce not only miniature and full-sized oxcarts but also fine furniture, leather goods, and a wide range of handicrafts.
The climate is mild and pleasant (18–26 °C), with a dry season from December to April. The town centre is compact, with the main artisan workshops and souvenir shops clustered along the main road and around the central park. Sarchí's church, with its ornate interior, is one of the most beautiful in the region.
Sarchí is an ideal half-day trip from San José, Alajuela, or as a stopover on the way to the northern regions. The town's artisan tradition dates back to the 19th century when oxcarts were the primary means of transporting coffee from the Central Valley to the port of Puntarenas.
