San Ramon
Alajuela, Costa Rica
Why visit San Ramon?
San Ramón is a charming agricultural town in the western Central Valley of Alajuela Province, perched at about 1,050 metres elevation on the slopes of the Tilarán mountain range. Known as the "City of Poets" (Ciudad de los Poetas) because several of Costa Rica's most celebrated poets were born here, San Ramón blends cultural heritage with a thriving coffee and dairy economy. The town serves as a gateway to the northern plains (San Carlos) and the cloud forests of Monteverde.
The climate is refreshingly mild, with temperatures ranging from 18–26 °C year-round. The surrounding hills are blanketed in coffee plantations and cattle ranches, offering scenic drives and rural tourism opportunities. San Ramón retains an authentic Tico character largely untouched by mass tourism.
The town centre follows the typical Costa Rican colonial grid, anchored by a central park and the parish church. The weekly farmers' market (feria) on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings is one of the best in the region, drawing vendors from surrounding farms.
