Why visit Tchikapika?

Tchikapika is a small settlement in northern Cuvette department, located in the remote forest region north of Makoua. The community is isolated, accessible by rough 4WD tracks or by pirogue along the river systems. The population lives by fishing, hunting, and subsistence farming in small clearings carved from the surrounding primary rainforest.

The climate is equatorial, with heavy rainfall throughout much of the year and a relatively drier period from June to September.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Nearest air access: Owando Airport (approximately 150 km south), with irregular charter flights from Brazzaville.

By Train

No railway access.

By Car / Road

Tchikapika is accessible via unpaved 4WD track from Makoua (approximately 30 km north). The track is rough and becomes impassable during the rainy season. A 4WD vehicle is essential.

By Boat

The settlement can also be reached by pirogue from Makoua or from river communities further north.
