Heze

Shandong Sheng, China

Why visit Heze?

Heze sits in southwestern Shandong Province on the flat alluvial plain near the borders of Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu provinces. Known historically as Caozhou, the city has served as China's primary peony cultivation center for more than a millennium, producing hundreds of named varieties that bloom across dedicated plantations each spring.

Beyond floriculture, Heze is an agricultural and manufacturing center tied to the traditions of the Yellow River valley. The city claims strong connections to classic Chinese literature and martial arts, particularly the Ming-era folk epic Water Margin, whose legendary outlaw hideouts were set in the surrounding wetlands. Standard Mandarin is spoken across hotels and transit hubs, but the Southwestern Mandarin-influenced Zhongyuan dialect is common in markets and neighborhood restaurants.

The local climate is monsoon-influenced continental (Köppen Cwa/Dwa), characterized by hot, humid summers, crisp autumns, and cold, dry winters.
