Ulanhot

Nei Mongol Zizhiqu, China

Why visit Ulanhot?

Ulanhot (乌兰浩特; Wūlánhàotè, meaning "Red City" in Mongolian) is the capital of the Hinggan League in eastern Inner Mongolia, located near the Nen River basin close to the Jilin border. The city is historically significant as the birthplace of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region — it was here that the People's Government of Inner Mongolia was founded on 1 May 1947, three years before the founding of the People's Republic of China. "Red City" refers to this revolutionary heritage. Today, Ulanhot is a pleasant, laid-back city with broad tree-lined streets, Mongolian architecture, and easy access to the Horqin Grassland in the south and the Greater Khingan Mountains in the north. The climate is temperate continental monsoon with cold, dry winters and warm summers. June–August is the best time to visit.
