Vila do Maio

Ilhas de Sotavento, Cabo Verde

Why visit Vila do Maio?

Vila do Maio, also historically known as Porto Inglês, is the sleepy, charming capital of Maio Island, which is part of the Sotavento group of Cabo Verde. With its tranquil rhythm, colorful colonial-style architecture, and expansive pristine beaches, the town offers a quiet and authentic island experience untouched by mass tourism. The town is situated on the southwest coast of the island and has a long history tied to the British salt trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, which gave Porto Inglês its historic name.

The town layout is simple, centering around its historic main church and municipal buildings, sloping down toward the sea and the local harbor. The atmosphere is exceptionally relaxed, characterized by the Cape Verdean concept of morabeza (hospitality). The climate is dry, sunny, and warm year-round, with constant Atlantic breezes that moderate the heat. The peak visitor season runs from November to June when conditions are dry and temperate, while the turtle nesting season takes place from June to October.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Maio Airport (MMO) is located about 3 km north of Vila do Maio. Flights are operated primarily from Nelson Mandela International Airport (RAI) in Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde, taking only 10 to 15 minutes. Shared minibuses (aluguers) and taxis are available at the airport to transfer passengers to the town center for about 200 to 300 CVE.

By Car / Road

Vila do Maio is also accessible by ferry from the port of Praia on Santiago Island, with crossings taking about 2 to 3 hours depending on sea conditions. The ferry docks directly at the Porto de Maio, which is situated adjacent to the town center. Taxis and aluguers wait at the port to carry travelers to their destinations.

The town of Vila do Maio is small and highly walkable, and visitors can easily reach all shops, restaurants, and beaches on foot. For exploring the wider island, bicycles are a popular rental option. Shared minibuses (aluguers) run regular routes connecting Vila do Maio to northern villages like Calheta, Morro, and Cascabulho. Private 4WD vehicles can also be rented in town for self-driving on the island's sandy or unpaved roads.
